Singapore - Available in September 2013, the unique collaboration between Spanish luxury leather house Loewe and Japan's bastion of cutting-edge design, Junya Watanabe for Comme des Garçons, has created some very special pieces with a street style fashion vibe.
Bringing together Loewe's creative director Stuart Vevers and the current creative director of Comme des Garçons, Junya Watanabe, the collaboration began over a "cup of tea" in Tokyo in November 2012.
This partnership between the two creative powerhouses from opposite sides of the world came at an opportune time; 2013 is the anniversary of two milestones in the relationship between Spain and Japan - 400 years since the two countries first set-up formal relations and 40 years since Loewe first became available in Japan.
According to Vevers, Loewe had already been discussing ideas for special projects for Japan, so the two designers worked together via email to come up with a worth collaboration.
"I have participated in collaborations before," said Watanabe, "but this is the first time I have collaborated with a specific designer at a brand. So I was nervous at the beginning. But all along, Loewe's approach has been, 'Request whatever you want and we will listen'. They have been really good to me. When I rather selfishly presented what I wanted to do, Stuart just said, 'OK, let's do it'."
The final outcome of the collaboration is a capsule collection that combines Watanabe's "urban utilitarian aesthetic" in a series of casualwear pieces mixing tartans, polka dot prints, denim and leather like a jeans-style jacket in napa leather, a patchwork leather skirt, a denim and leather mini skirt and denim and leather mix jeans for women and men.
For Loewe's iconic Amazona bag the same combinations of fabric and leather mixes are available in four sizes, as well as in pouches, purses and a tote bag.
Loewe has also created a number of pieces in Watanabe's Autumn Winter 2013-14 collection, so the collaboration has gone both ways.
The Loewe and Junya Watanabe for Comme des Garçons capsule collection will be be exclusively available at cult multi-label store Dover Street Market Ginza from the end of August; from September 1, 2013, it will be available in 40 stores worldwide and online at www.loewe.com.
Prices for the bags range from about $4,422 for the largest Amazona to around $566 for a coin purse.
