Singapore - A traditional piece of undergarment known as the dudou has been re-styled into a modern and popular piece of clothing worn by celebrities and famous personalities. The garment is so much in demand that the price of one can go as high as $3,000.
The popularity of this apron-shaped undergarment was also thrust in the spotlight recently when former SCDF chief Peter Lim revealed in trial that Pang Chor Mui had tried to seduce him by wearing a dudou with nothing underneath it.
Shop owners in Chinatown told Shin Min Daily News that there were only three types of customers who would purchase the said piece of clothing - celebrities, tourists and night club entertainers. It is said to be called 'dudou' as it covers the belly.
One of the most famous fans of this traditional silk garment is socialite Jamie Chua. While on holiday in Bali, she told reporters in a phone interview that she had attended a fashion event in a $3,000 dudou last year.
The socialite, who was involved in a high-profile divorce from Indonesian tycoon Nurdian Cuaca two years ago, chose to wear the dudou due to its distinctive features. She said her outfit was well-received and that she received praise from many people for her outfit of choice that evening.
She added that she bought her dudou at a shop in Orchard Road. As she will only return to Singapore the following week, she is unable to show the $3,000 dudou to the Chinese daily.
The Chinese paper also reported that editors at other magazines said they were surprised at the sudden popularity of the dudou. As it is commonly seen as an unfashionable piece of clothing, its recent revival has puzzled many.
