Singapore - Have you ever met a man, the one guy you needed in your life, who swept you off your feet?

The one who looked sharp and oh, so hot, who walked with swag, had a honeyed tongue and seemed to know exactly what to do.

And then, you get to that first kiss and all the hype goes down the drain?

That's almost how I feel about Avalon.

After hearing about the exclusive brand-name megaclub's entry into our clubbing scene in September 2011, I stepped through its doors for the first time and it left me breathless.

The panoramic view of the city skyline from its floating pavilion venue at Marina Bay Sands dropped jaws.

The house music downstairs was hopping and the R&B and hip-hop room upstairs were swinging as well.

First visit - great fun.

Second visit - a birthday party - let's get drunk.

But third time wasn't the charm. It was then that I questioned what the big deal was.

The hip-hop room started playing Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. I'm sorry, but I wasn't there for radio music.

So when the place that's been raved about as one of Singapore's most glamorous and "atas" (upmarket in Malay) joints closes after tomorrow's final hoorah (the management has never given an official reason as to why), it's perhaps for the best.

And no, I won't be missing you.

Well, at least until Avalon attempts a makeover (renovation, which they don't really need) and rebranding (still being kept under wraps).

Despite being pegged as the "playground for the rich kids", Avalon failed to pack its 17,000 sq ft premises over time - the common sight was rowdy allowance-receiving brats driving Daddy's Merc who were a pain to be around.

Better choices

Suddenly, every other "professional" guy with crooked teeth and bad fashion sense in the room seemed to be a better choice.

So with the popularity and rise of Kyo and Dom Lounge, as well as established nightspots like Zouk, Mink and Attica, Avalon's closure is a nonevent for me.

The competition is hot right now and I wouldn't be surprised to see more clubs suffer the same fate.

Who's next to bite the dust? Pangaea? Dream?

Maybe after the facelift, the new and hopefully improved incarnation of Avalon at the same pristine location will stop having just ONE resident DJ or organise "hip-hop events" that feature has-been acts like Kelis.

Let's face it - nobody's got time for that.
