by Simran Panaech, Plush|18 June 2009

The $1 million Emirates Singapore Derby is set to return for the 14th time with Dubai-based Emirates airline continuing as its long-term title sponsor.

One of the richest and most prestigious events on Singapore’s racing calendar, the 2,000-metre race will run on Sunday, July 12, 2009 at the Singapore Racecourse and will feature some of Singapore’s top horses in action.

Stephen Chu, Emirates’ Country Manager for Singapore and Brunei said, “We are proud of what the Emirates Singapore Derby has become and are pleased to have been able to play a role in bringing Singapore’s equestrian sport to new heights.”

Yu Pang Fey, President and Chief Executive, Singapore Turf Club said, “The Emirates brand name is synonymous with prestige, excellence and style, and these are the exact same qualities that we want to associate with the Derby

“The Singapore Turf Club has a long tradition of giving back to the community and we are delighted once again to extend the occasion of Derby Day to Emirates to raise funds for the unprivileged.”

This year, the Emirates Singapore Derby focuses on two “Gs”: Generosity and Glamour.

Generosity: Getting guests to support a worthy cause

Emirates aims to raise at least $150,000 for four voluntary welfare organisations under the umbrella of the Community Chest of Singapore.

Fundraising activities include the pre-sale of donation tables, outright donations and a silent auction of a specially commissioned painting by Francis Kwok, a renowned local artist and long-time supporter of the Emirates Singapore Derby.

Glamour: Showcasing the best of racing fashion

For many, the Emirates Singapore Derby it is seen as the epitome of racing fashion in Singapore.

On Derby Day, guests come dressed in their best racing outfits can compete for the hotly-anticipated “Best Dressed to the Races” contest.

This year’s winner will have the privilege of attending the Emirates Melbourne Cup in November, courtesy of Emirates, and have the opportunity of competing in the Cup’s “Fashion on the Fields” contest.

During the media conference to announce the sponsorship, guests were treated to a preview of Derby Day fashion with a special fashion show featuring 14 outfits from the Heng Nam Nam Boutique.

At the show, Heng Nam Nam’s collection was complemented by chic and elegant head-pieces exclusively designed for this occasion by Melbourne-based milliner and fashion consultant, Shai Tabassi.

Race-goers planning to dress up for the occasion can visit Heng Nam Nam Boutique at Park Mall, B1-16 (Tel: ) or contact Shai Tabassi at .
