Singapore - The Peranakan Association celebrated its 113th anniversary with an evening of traditional glamour and a tantalising spread of its cuisine with over 400 guests in the ballroom of Concorde Hotel.

Held on July 26, Babas and Nyonyas arrived in their colourful kebayas and batiks to enjoy a festive evening with their family and friends, and also to raise funds for the Association.

With a food theme of 'Laok embok embok' (A spread of Peranakan food), the evening promised not only a scrumptious array of mouth-watering dishes prepared by the hotel chefs, but also a night of entertainment focusing on Peranakan culture and history.

During the ball, guests were serenaded by the musical tunes of choir group 'The Peranakan Voices' and band 'Evergreen'. Then, they also enjoyed a skit and participated in a quiz.

The ballroom was later turned into a musical hall as guests belted out in their best voices to the sing-a-along and also danced in the popular 'Joget' segment.

Founded in 1900 by Tan Jiak Kim, the non-profit organisation holds an annual ball to commemorate the anniversary of the its founding and to raise funds for its expenses.

The Association relies solely on public donations to fund their activities to promote Peranakan culture and history in Singapore.

Other than the ball, the Association also organises lunch gatherings on alternate years, and also talks at museums and schools.

The Peranakan Association wishes to thank the committee members Mr Chan Eng Thai (Chairman);  Mr Francis Chia, Mrs Irene Ooi, Ms Irene Poh, Ms Susan Fong, Ms Gwen Ong, Ms Angeline Kong and Ms Christine Ong for the organisation of the Peranakan Ball 2013.
