10 expensive hobbies only the rich and famous can afford

Singapore - The rich and famous people in the world enjoy not only luxury accessories and properties, they also get to indulge in hobbies which sometimes can cost them over a million dollars.

The hobbies of the rich and famous are not all that different from the ones of ordinary folks. They own and breed pets, and enjoy a ride in their cars. They also play sports and keep fit in their free time.

The only difference is that rich people pay a lot more to enjoy their exclusive hobbies, and can enjoy activities which only a big bank account can have access to.

Many families have dogs and cats at home, but with rich people, they own and breed animals which can be an exotic breed worth thousands.

Celebrity millionaire Nicolas Cage has a pet octopus which he splashed out US$150,000 (S$188,000) for, according to Born Rich, while fellow actress Kristen Stewart breeds wolf-dog hybrids at home. Some of the exotic breeds that are popular include white tigers, cheetahs, albino snakes and even macaws, said reports online.

For wealthy people who have tons of money to splurge, having million-dollar toys such as yachts and race cars can give them to access to cultivate adrenaline-pumping activities into hobbies.

If it is the dream of race car enthusiasts to drive one of the world's fastest automobiles, the world's super rich probably has done it.

According to The Richest, an online news site, a racing experience on a professional track can cost approximately US$360 (S$450) - for a mere 15 minutes. This amount excludes annual registration fees and other costs such as insurance.

If heading out to sea is preferred, millionaires and billionaires can take their yachts, often costing more than US$800,000, said Born Rich, for a weekend getaway or even enter one of the prestigious yachting competitions held in Dubai or Monaco.

According to a report on Bloomberg News in September 2013, submersibles are becoming popular among the rich, and even making an appearance at the Monaco Yacht Show this year. Dubbed as 'underwater planes', these submersibles can cost around US$1.5 million to US$4.2 million and give the owner a new way of exploring nature.

For those who enjoy a different kind of thrill, high-stakes poker is another hobby that clearly deserves to be reserved for the rich. With million-dollar buy-ins and payouts, Born Rich said very few people can afford to be high-stakes poker players. Among the known players include multi-millionaires rapper Jay-Z and boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
