We filled up entire swimming pool with champagne
by The New Paper|07 May 2013

Singapore - When it comes to living it up, clubbing is merely a small fraction of the money some young people spend.

Those aged between 18 and 21 whom TNPS spoke to say the real big money is spent on house parties.

According to polytechnic student Zoer Oh, 20, together with her friends, she has spent up to six figures on house parties. And that is just for one night.

She says: "The amount is high enough that I can't possibly carry that much cash, so we generally sign cheques - that's why it's quite hard to keep track of exactly how much I spend a night."

Her family is involved in the hotel and hospitality industry in Korea.

"Most of my friends are not Singaporean, so they will come here and party.

"I started partying when I was about 14 years old. So after a while, clubbing and nightlife get boring. And it's the same for my friends.

"So now, in order to excite ourselves, we need to do more extreme things."

When pressed to share some of their extravagant activities, Miss Oh says: "Once, a few of us filled up an entire swimming pool with champagne and drank from it.

"But that's not the craziest thing we've done.

"Most of my friends are foreigners, and they have very elaborate, unconventional ideas - especially the guys - and they feel that they need to assert their wealth and one-up each other.

"So sometimes we end up doing a lot of crazy and, frankly, quite stupid things.

"The alcohol is probably the least we spend on. We always want variety, and even at clubs, we will usually have at least a bottle of everything that is available. The amount spent on alcohol is nothing.

"It's the games that are more over the top."

Her group of young, wealthy friends play games that many other teenagers play - albeit with a twist.

Miss Oh sheepishly explains: "For example, we will play card games too, but on the table will be stakes that include property and sports cars.

"A lot of my friends are quite spoilt, so to them this isn't very much. "In fact, sports cars are commonly put up and lost as stakes."

To be able to coolly spend tens of thousands of dollars just on partying, especially since she is only an intern, TNPS is naturally curious as to how much Miss Oh receives a month in allowance.

Miss Oh was rather shy to disclose the amount. She says: "It's a bit weird to talk about how much I get, I don't want to come across as I'm showing off or anything. Let's just say that I can buy a Celine bag a day."

A Celine bag - if you are wondering - costs anything from $1,000 to $4,000.
