Don’t miss UNESCO Award of Excellence for Handicrafts exhibit & pop-up
by Sara Jane Ong, herworldPLUS|04 October 2013

Tangs Orchard launched their showcase of award-winning handicrafts made from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Award of Excellence on October 2, 2013.

Previously held in fairs and museums, the event in Singapore marks the first time such products are being exhibited in a retail environment. All of the handicrafts, which originate from East Asia, South Asia and Southeast Asia have received awards for being culturally authentic, innovative and eco-friendly.

With some of the products, cultural tradition has been made contemporary, like the Lac Mirror Jewellery Box, crafted by women who previously made bangles. Originating from South Asia, the beautiful rectangular box is made entirely of lacquer, that creates a gold and crystal-like gleam when placed under light.

For the family-oriented and home cooks, the Grandma's Kitchen set from East Asia will be a lovely sight, consisting of an apron, towel, kitchen glove, bag and pot holder - made of indigo fabric and adorned with cloud appliques.

Children and soft toy collectors will be happy to know that toys are being exhibited at the showcase as well, with animals such as tigers, sheep and even puppies taking the form of friendly toys. Finger puppets laid out in a row are also an endearing sight.

For those who want to buy these products, there is a pop-up shop along with the exhibition as well, selling handicrafts like handbags, kitchenware, fans and cushion covers. You can browse through an entire selection of quality handicrafts, plus, of course you can buy them.

Tangs Orchard is also going to open a heritage shop in the basement level in mid-November, selling these products plus additional goodies if you miss the pop-up store.

The UNESCO Award of Excellence for Handicrafts showcase and pop-up store is at Tangs Orchard Level One to Three until October 13, 2013. The heritage shop is set to open in the basement of Tangs Orchard in mid-November, 2013.
